Enhanced Payment Plans for Self-Assessment Tax – Time to Pay

Posted 06/10/2020

Self-Assessment customers can now apply online to help spread the cost of their tax bill into monthly payments, up to a maximum of 12 months from 1 February 2021, without the need to call HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

If you cannot afford to pay your latest tax bill in full, you can set up a payment plan to spread the cost of your latest Self-Assessment bill if you:

  • Owe £30,000.00 or less
  • Do not have any other payment plans or debts with HMRC.
  • Do not have outstanding tax returns
  • Do not have any other tax debts

Self-Assessment tax that can be included within ‘Time to Pay’ include the payments that were due in either July 2020 or January 2021, including the payment on account towards 2020/21.

For details of how to set-up a payment plan or instalments online and for all other options to pay, please see https://www.gov.uk/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill/pay-in-instalments

Balances included within ‘Time to Pay’ will be required to pay any interest on the tax owed. Interest will be applied to the outstanding balance from 1 February 2021.

If your Self-Assessment debts are over £30,000.00, or you need longer than 12 months to pay your debt in full, you may still be able to set up a Time to Pay arrangement by calling the Self-Assessment Payment Helpline on 0300 200 3822
