Tell HMRC and pay the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grant back

Posted 29/07/2020

You must tell HMRC if you made a claim for the grant that you weren’t eligible for or you received more than HMRC said you were entitled to.

The date you received the grant determines when you must notify HMRC of an erroneous grant. If you received the grant:

  • before 22 July 2020 you must tell HMRC on or before 20 October 2020
  • on or after 22 July 2020 you must tell HMRC within 90 days of receiving the grant

If you don’t tell HMRC within the notification period you may have to pay a penalty.

To notify HMRC you will need your Government Gateway user ID and password that you used when you made the claim, your grant claim reference, and your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference). Once you’ve completed the online form HMRC will give you bank details to pay back the grant.
